Being an engaged consumer-patient goes beyond just knowing which questions to ask your doctor at your annual check-up. It means taking the time to research and understand different aspects of your care including your right to ask for generic instead of brand name prescriptions, knowing you can negotiating your medical bills and for those with health insurance, understanding basic insurance terms like co-pay or deductible.

This infographic visually explains the findings of a recent survey they conducted which found that a majority of Americans aren’t as savvy healthcare consumers as they would like to think. Considering those with a “higher” IQ usually have better outcomes at a lower cost, being a “savvy” healthcare consumer-patient literally pays off in the long run.
